Namiki Falcon Writing Sample!
I’ve been really busy lately, and haven’t had much time to play with my Grail pen!
But a couple of people asked for a writing sample, so it was a good excuse to bring out the Namiki Falcon that I had modified as an extra fine, extra flexible nib by John Mottishaw. The paper is a large Quo Vadis Habana, and the ink is J. Herbin Violette Pensée.
I’ve never used a non-modified Namiki Falcon, and I haven’t even used that many flexible nibs, so I don’t have much of a basis of comparison. However, the modified Falcon’s nib seems pretty flexible to me, and it has loosened up even more from when I first started using it. It was a bit scratchy when I first received it, which is perhaps to be expected of such an extra-fine-nibbed pen. I did some ill-advised nib smoothing on my own (I was impatient!), but I like the results–it’s better behaved now. Mind you, I haven’t used flexible nibs very long, and I need a lot more practice, but here are my amateurish attempts at writing with this pen!

Looks fine to me, especially for early days with the nib.
Thanks, TAO!
I’ll try to find time to keep practicing!
Looks like fun! You’re already doing very well.
If that’s a first attempt, you missed your calling.
Inkophile: You’re too kind! It’s not my very first attempt, but I’ve only used it a handful of times for a few minutes each (at least using the flex–I’ve used it to write a letter without using its flexible properties).
Erin: Thank you! I have too many other areas of my life that are stressful–I’m trying to enjoy this pen and have fun with it!
Oooo, I’m green with envy! In a good way, though.
I’ve been drooling over a Namiki Falcon for a while now, but unless my numbers come up on the lottery I think it’s going to be a while before I get to play like you have. Your handwriting is beautiful, BTW.
Thanks, Sam!
I don’t have a lot of experience with flexy nibs, but this one has been quite fun! I have a vintage flexy nib on its way, too, so I might have more of a basis of comparison soon!
